About this Event
Led by published playwright and actor John Webber – originally from South Ockendon - this writing workshop will give you access to simple techniques to unlock your creativity.
The session will start you on your journey of writing for performance, and the skills will be applicable to any type of fiction writing.
The focus of the sessions will be 'writing for performance' - there will be transferable skills for other forms of creative writing that will be developed through a variety of creative writing exercises.
The theme will be Thurrock Stories and the environment in its broadest sense, this could be the house you live in, a garden you’ve visited right through to conversations about climate change.
Suitable for those aged 14+. Under 18s must be accompanied by an adult.

Outside: The venue is situated on Derwent Parade, the high street in South Ockendon.
The surface outside is level and the main entrance is step free.
The main entrance is step-free. There are two heavy doors that open towards you (pull). There are two secondary doors inside that open away from you by pressing a button.
There is a side entrance that has a small lip of 2cm. This is a locked door and will have a staff member present.
There is extremely limited parking spaces at this venue but spaces are available in the nearby Derwent Parade car park.
Inside: There is an accessible toilet fixed with a hoist.
There are low levelled tables and kitchen counters.
Motorised scooters are welcomed in public parts of the venue.

By Train: The nearest mainline station is South Ockendon, which is 1.3 miles away (28 minute walk). You can take the 269 Bus Route which is an 8 minute journey including 4 minutes of walking.
By Bus: Bus Routes - 22/269/77. The nearest bus stops are Dawley Green & Darenth Lane, which are within 320metres (3 minute walk) of the venue.
By Car: If arriving by car, there are limited parking spaces available on the high street. Alternative parking can be found at the top of Derwent Parade on Daiglen Road. If this is full, please use adjacent streets where there are no parking restrictions.
More details about the artist:
John Webber is a working-class artist who grew up on a council estate in Thurrock.
He studied drama at the University College of North Wales and acting at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.
His acting career started in theatre for young people, working on new plays and devised pieces which then toured.
As an actor he has worked at the Royal National Theatre and at regional theatres around the UK. Television credits include the EastEnders, Coronation Street and Doctor Foster.
REAP, his first full-length play, was longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize and selected for the Arcola Theatre’s PlayWROUGHT festival.
His play, Spiderfly was selected for the Park Theatre’s Script Accelerator Scheme and had the support of Old Vic New Voices before being produced by Metal Rabbit at Theatre503. It is published by Nick Hern Books.
John was a BRIT Program Guest Artist at the University of South Florida, where his commissioned adaptation of Emma by Jane Austin was performed.
He was part of the High Tide Supported Artist cohort during the pandemic and his latest play, Wake Up People, is a Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch commission. He was a Colchester Mercury Playwright 2022-23 and a recipient of a Peggy Ramsey Foundation Grant in 2023.
