Join us for a thought-provoking talk by Emily Major, a recent doctoral graduate from the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, New Zealand. Emily's Human-Animal Studies PhD challenges the common narrative of possums as 'pests' in Aotearoa New Zealand and explores compassionate approaches to conservation. Through her research, which included interviews and questionnaires with people of diverse backgrounds—Māori, Moriori, Pākehā, and tauiwi—Emily has identified four potential solutions for evolving conservation practices. Her work captures the perspectives of animal advocates, environmental scientists, teachers, academics, and biodiversity advisors.
As one of UC's 2023 Graduate Success Stories, Emily is now focused on publishing her findings in academic journals and transforming her dissertation into a book. This talk will offer a summary of her research and pose the question: How can we, as a society, cultivate compassion for all living beings, not just native species?
