What is a food co-op? A food co-op is a local, member-owned grocery formed cooperatively by neighbors with a democratic model rather than by a private or public company. Food co-ops support affordable, fresh foods and locally grown and farmed offerings.
Green Bay's downtown on both sides of the river is a qualified food desert. Trader Joe's and Whole Foods Market are not coming to save us! The bright side is our downtown is home to a number of available commercial properties with an opportunity for adaptive reuse, and our community is home to hundreds of people who are committed to improving the quality of life for ourselves and our neighbors.
Opening a food co-op is an initiative and investment which spans several years. It's time we start the community conversation now.
