About this Event
Professor Jack Zipes, a renowned author and expert on fairy tales and myths observes “myths and fairy tales seem to know something we do not know ... We keep returning to them for answers.” We may discard them as nonsense, but “these lies are often the lies that govern our lives.”
Another way to look at myths is to view them as symbolic representations of our internal psychic world. By examining their narratives, we gain access to the deepest workings of our minds and hearts. “Mythology is a psychology of antiquity,” writes James Hillman, the great archetypal Jungian analyst, in The Dream and the Underworld. And “psychology is a mythology of modernity.”
At the beginning of each session there will be a brief presentation thinking about:
- History of the Story
- Common interpretations of this story
- Symbolism in the tale and Archetypal Imagery.
The group will then spend the majority of time sharing reflections, thoughts and associations to the story. Experiencing in action how through the group ‘s discussion, meeting our reactions, our connection to symbols, imagery and association along the way, we might enable each other to better understand ourselves, each other and some of the stories we all live.
This workshop is for anyone interested in psychology and stories. It may be of particular interest to psychologists and therapists - including those who are professionally established and those just starting out.
