Greatest MINDS presents our Generations "Roots Conference" for Black Youth of Boston bringing us together to support the next generation.
About this Event

Join us as young people, parents, community organizers, leaders, and non-profits leaders for our youth conference based in Nubian Square - Roxbury, MA - the hub of the black community.

The Greatest MINDS is looking for support for its Generations Conference. Our community convenings and programs have been very successful in the past year and look to continue them to bring about more civic change in communities. Many of our convenings have community leaders, youth, and parents in the forefront discussing civic issues on education, voting, health, urban transportation, etc., and how to make it in Boston as a Black person in Boston with limited resources (ie. $8 net worth). Our convenings have been well received by all parties including politicians, activists, youth, and parents. Again, our work centers on the Black Boston-born and raised experience, while other organizations are well-meaning - we get at the root causes of the indigenous Black Bostonians' who have experienced intergenerational poverty.

All of our staff and mentors are born and raised Black Bostonians with a sincere interest in making the city respond to the needs of their families and the communities they grew up in.

BACKGROUND:

Greatest MINDS was founded by Black Bostonians and has a full board of directors and staff who are from Boston's Black communities. Our work centers on the Black Boston-born and raised experience, while other organizations are well-meaning and often founded by foundations, national in scope, and others where good-intentioned white people are at the helm of leadership, Greatest MINDS gets at the "root causes" of the generations of Black Bostonians who have experienced racism, discrimination, and intergenerational poverty firsthand. We are all "proximate" leaders. "Being a proximate leader is about much more than being exposed to or studying a group of people and its struggles to overcome adversity. It’s about actually being a part of that group or being meaningfully guided by that group’s input, ideas, agendas, and assets." All of our programs are led by Black Bostonians with experience in community and relationship building directly with the Roxbury, Dorchester, and Mattapan neighborhoods. We garner the fact that our neighborhoods are not full of deficits, but full of resources - and push for our young people and community to see otherwise by building authentic relationships with educators, entrepreneurs, activists, artists, young professionals, and residents.
