Join a volunteering day rooted in change.
Imagine this, you’re stood in the sunshine, cuppa in hand, breathing in the fresh air and admiring a day’s hard work planting delicious vegetables which you’ll be rewarded with in a few months' time. Sound good right?
We can’t guarantee the sunshine (this is Manchester after all) but we can promise spending time in an allotment, learning about sustainable gardening while creating a better food growing space to benefit local communities is a day well spent!
Allotments are fantastic spaces for local people to grow their own food and share it amongst the community. But allotments often have huge waitlists and can be difficult and labour intensive to maintain.
After we’ve got stuck in and done a bit of trowl and error, the space will be used as a ‘test and learn’ site to run a series of ‘gardening for wellbeing’ sessions as part of the NHS England’s pilot for Green Social Prescribing, using the new community space and its plants to improve physical and mental health, as well as communications and thinking skills for local people.
This volunteering day is part of In Our Nature, a city-wide programme working with local communities across Manchester to find new and creative ways to make the city a greener, healthier and more connected place to live.

The Great Big Great Week is providing concrete opportunities to Manchester residents to get their hands dirty by joining a series of local volunteering events and workshops linked to nature, as a chance to connect with nature while benefiting the wider community by creating better, greener, more welcoming spaces for all.
