About this Event

The Volusia County Explore Volusia program invites you to join Environmental Specialist Tommy Nordmann for a one-mile hike and participate in the annual Great Backyard Bird Count. Using your smart phone, we’ll show you how you can help scientists identify birds at Scrub Oak Preserve during this international event.

** Important note: Please arrive 15 minutes prior to complete a waiver. Waivers must be completed in full to participate in the program. Waivers can be downloaded at Explore Volusia and completed ahead of time.

ACTIVITY: This will be a moderate 1-mile hike. Hiking may be difficult for some due to soft, sugar-sand on the trails.

RESERVATIONS: Required. Unless you have a confirmation email, you are not registered.

TICKETS: No printed ticket is necessary.

AGES: Ages ten and up are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

ATTIRE: closed-toe shoes, comfortable clothing for the outdoors

** Some of our trails have mud and/or standing water because they are located in wetland ecosystems and because of seasonal rains and high tides. We recommend you bring a pair of waterproof boots in addition to your regular hiking shoes if you don't want your shoes to get wet. Our hike leader will let you know the condition of the trails prior to the start of the hike.

WHAT TO BRING: water, bug spray, sunscreen, binoculars and smart phone (not required to participate)

FACILITIES: There is a port-a-let on site but no running water.
