GOTHIKA is Hollywood horror as slick as it comes, commanded by an all-star cast led by Berry, Cruz, and a comeback-ready Robert Downey, Jr. Widely panned upon its release, critics could not reconcile the film's interweaving of the supernatural and psychological, the very piece that makes it hold up today. Nor did they notice (or care) about the underlying themes that emerge around women's sanity and right to be believed, and the abuses that occur to institutionalized people. While indeed a product of its time, GOTHIKA is a campy yet original thriller that turns up the dial on atmosphere and chills. (Alicia Coombs)
