In order to practice living gratefully moment by moment, we benefit from having a variety of “practice terrains” consistently available to us. The body offers us this territory with tangible aplomb. When we learn to inhabit our bodies with a sense of grateful presence, perspective, and possibility, the benefits make themselves known to us both immediately and far beyond the moment, and these benefits can readily ripple out to inform and impact other areas of our lives. When the body is held with awe and empathy, it can lead us to a gentler and more interconnected sense of relatedness and belonging: We recognize that we all have bodies that require nourishment, experience both pain and pleasure, generate both comfort and discomfort, and accomplish great feats simply to function. The listening heart becomes attuned to the nuanced wisdom of the body and all of its senses as we deepen our practice. Awakening to gratefulness, we start with the body, for the body is what we “wake in” every day.
Presence
What are some ways you might invite yourself to be more present with your body? What feelings arise when you become more present to your body?
Throughout the day, how could you practice using each of your senses to become more fully present?
Perspective
What kinds of reminders and experiences help you to have a more grateful perspective about your body?
Does learning that Kristi Nelson is a stage IV cancer survivor — in the Dancing Anyway video — impact your perspective on the “Grateful for Getting Older” essay? If so, how?
Possibility
When you feel truly grateful for your body — exactly as it is — what seems more possible for you?
How might appreciating your own body inspire greater empathy and compassion for the struggles of others? How might this invite you to act differently in the world? What might it inspire?
This event is free.
Facilitated by Karin Cross.
