About this Event

Graphic Novel creators and Comics fans—Street Noise Books, publisher of powerful graphic novels that are “Unapologetic, Authentic, and Politically relevant” and two of its notable authors will be guests of the Graduate Center at 6pm on May 16th in Room 5414 on the fifth floor.

This special author and publisher talk will offer a unique look into the distinct work and process of graphic novel artists and writers Bishakh Som and Tracy White in a discussion led by Street Noise publisher and founder Liz Frances.

There will be food and refreshments served after the Q&A.

About our featured guests:

Bishakh Som, who grew up in New York City, but whose parents were originally from India, received a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard University and worked for many years in that field, most notably at I.M. Pei’s New York office. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Boston Review, Buzzfeed, and The Huffington Post. Bishakh published a collection of stories with The Feminist Press titled Apsara Engine. She lives in Brooklyn, New York. Website: bishakh.com Instagram: @biche_bash

Tracy White began publishing her comics for young adults online in 1996. Her autobiographical series TRACED was twice nominated for a best web comic Ignatz, and became a TV series for Oxygen. Her book How I Made it to Eighteen: A Mostly True Story was on YALSA’s Great Graphic Novels for Teens list. She is currently teaching comics at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Liz Frances is the founder and publisher of Street Noise Books. Having worked as an art director and book designer in the big publishing houses of New York City, Frances enjoyed collaborating with many gifted writers, illustrators, graphic artists and editors and saw a need for a different kind of publisher to serve the graphic novel and graphic memoir form. In the wake of the 2016 U.S. presidential election, she became passionately driven to advocate for the power of love and compassion in the face of hate and oppression.

I am creating Street Noise Books to provide a platform from which truth can be told, a place to share our stories, to foster community, and a means to build a future where all people are free and respected.” -Liz Frances.

It’s all happening THURSDAY May 16th 2024 at 6pm in Room 5414
