NYC-based pianist Grant Richards is a Portland native and award-winning jazz performer, composer, and educator known for his versatility. He began playing at eight, earned four DownBeat Student Music Awards, and attended Berklee on a full-tuition scholarship. Over the years he has performed with artists including Esperanza Spalding, Eddie Gomez, Terri Lyne Carrington, and Kurt Rosenwinkel. His work has taken him from Portland to Japan to New York, where he continues to perform and teach.Richards has led a range of projects, from his Afro-Cuban–influenced album Ballyhoo—named one of Jazziz’s best releases of 2021—to his recent quartet and sextet ensembles. His groups have earned support from Chamber Music America and the Cafe Royal Cultural Foundation, with new recordings planned through 2025. In 2024 he released Menagerie, a collaborative project blending jazz, pop, and neo-soul. He currently resides in Brooklyn.
