The Kentmere Horseshoe, sometimes called the Kentmere Round, is one of the longest and most remote walks in the Lake District and is another of the classic Lakeland routes. This 12.8 miles (20.7km) route starts and finishes in the village of Kentmere, four miles to the north of Staveley (the nearest toilet facilities). This undulating walk of 3,559ft (1085m) ascent includes nine ‘Wainwrights’ of High Street, Thornthwaite Crag, Harter Fell (Mardale), Mardale Ill Bell, Ill Bell, Kentmere Pike, Froswick, Yoke, Shipman Knotts, hence its popularity.
The route is mostly on good, clear paths, starting on hard stony paths before heading round to the soft grass of a wide ridge, with a little scrambling over rocks at the end.
This walk is best for fit, strong walkers, however, please rest assured that our Grand Scale Trails are led by a qualified and experienced Mountain Leader, who will support you and encourage you along the way. We will have plenty of rest breaks and walk as a group at all times.
