About this Event
The Museums of Western Colorado presents our 2024 Trips and Tours Program!
The Grand Mesa Geologic Field Trip will offer participants an introduction to how the Grand Mesa was created from a geologic perspective. Participants do not need to have a background in geology to enjoy this excursion, but an appreciation for the great outdoors will make for a more enjoyable experience!
With Grand Mesa being one of the largest, flattest, and highest erosional landforms in the world, there is so much to learn. We will provide insight into a handful of geological questions including:
- What kind of rocks make up the Grand Mesa? How old are they? How did they originate?
- How did the Grand Mesa's lava cap relate to the volcanic history of Western Colorado?
- What triggered volcanism?
- Why is the Grand Mesa one of the most unstable areas in Colorado?
- When and how will erosion finaly destroy the Grand Mesa?
All participants must complete and return a before participating in any of our Trips and Tours.
Difficulty: Moderate difficulty. Those attending the field trip should be accustomed to high elevations (9,500-10,800 ft) and not have any significant health issues. Some hiking with elevation gains of several hundred feet will be included at several field stops. Total hiking distance is about two miles on existing trails. Several stops will be at exposed cliff edges. Participants should expect to be outside in cool temperatures with insects with the possibility of rain.
What to Bring: Participants should dress of hiking outdoors in warm to cool temperatures: bring a wide-brimmed hat, sturdy close-toed shoes or hiking boots, sunscreen, bug spray, and a camera.
Included: A handout with color photos and figures will be provided alongside Rex Cole's 2022 book, "Geology of Grand Mesa".
