About this Event

From New York Times bestselling author of Come With Me and This Beautiful Life, Helen Schulman, the Gramercy Book Club selection for July is Lucky Dogs, a propulsive novel about two women on opposite ends of a high-profile sexual abuse scandal. Gramercy Books owner and novelist Linda Kass will facilitate the group discussion and interview Schulman, who will join via Zoom in the latter portion of the evening.

Kittie’s will be open only to attendees, beginning at 5:00 pm, with beverages and sweet and savory snacks available for purchase. The book discussion begins at 6:30 pm

A ticket to this program includes a copy of Lucky Dogs at a 15% discount. It is strongly encouraged that registrants read the book prior to the program.

Says Jennifer Egan, author of A Visit from the Goon Squad and The Candy House, about Lucky Dogs: "Part thriller, part Hollywood satire, Lucky Dogs is a brash, sometimes heartbreaking saga in which trauma and self-preservation converge across decades and continents. This is Helen Schulman's best novel yet."

Merry Montgomery is an American actress hiding in Paris after speaking out about her sexual assault at the hands of a famous Hollywood producer. As she works on a memoir to further expose her rapist and win public opinion over to her side, she encounters Nina, a striking, mysterious woman who pulls out a switchblade to fend off tourists harassing them and offers to help Merry tell her story. Both women have been victims of male violence that shaped their characters—one trained and calculating, one instinctually ferocious. They each think they know who are dealing with. But both are very, very wrong.

Acclaimed novelist Helen Schulman mines real-life events to craft a riveting story that features twists and turns spanning Hollywood, Paris, Sarajevo, Tel Aviv, and Boca Raton. In a story that unfolds with unexpected humor and the pace of a thriller, Schulman lays bare what happens to women—no matter how fortunate they may appear to be on the surface—whose lives have been warped by brutality and misogyny. The issues are universal, but the core of the story is intimate: a passionate exploration of love, betrayal, and survival. Lucky Dogs asks and answers a shattering question: How could one woman so utterly betray another?

Helen Schulman is the New York Times best-selling author of six novels, including Come with Me and This Beautiful Life. She has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, the New York Foundation for the Arts, Sundance, Aspen Words, and Columbia University. She currently serves as the Fiction Chair of the Creative Writing Program at The New School, where she is a tenured professor. She also serves as Executive Director for WriteOn NYC, a fellowship program that provides free creative writing instruction to underserved New York City school children.

Linda Kass is the author of three historical novels, including Tasa’s Song and A Ritchie Boy. Bessie, her fictional portrait of the early life of 1945 Miss America, Bess Myerson, will be released on September 12. She began her career as a magazine journalist and correspondent for regional and national publications. She is the founder and owner of Gramercy Books, an independent bookstore in the Columbus, Ohio area.
