About this Event
The Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club lead this shorewalk to explore and understand the extent of Superstorm Sandy’s flooding around our Gowanus Canal, and reflect on the past and future flows of water in the neighborhood. While we explore ghost streams and imagine future storms intensified by climate change, we will delve into the shared history of water and society along our Gowanus estuary, and imagine the future for this intrepid shoreline.
Tour runs rain or shine & meet outside Mirror In the Woods, 575 Union St., 2 blocks from R Union St subway station, also sometimes flooded during heavy rains.
Stops on the walk will include our Flushing Tunnel (pumping 300 million gallons of water into the canal each day), Thomas Greene Park (soon-to-be site of EPA's multi-million dollar remediation), Gowanus Station Building (scheduled for demolition to facilitate EPA's multi-million gallon sewage tanks), to Third Street Bridge, with discussion of Hamilton Street Bridge (the site of a proposed mile-long storm surge barrier).
Our walk will be led by by Steve Koller, an Environmental Science and Policy PhD student and Eymund Diegel, board member of the Gowanus Dredgers Canoe Club and a passionate mapping detective of hidden waterways.
