Shri Goverdha Leela is a story about Poorna Purshottam Shri Krishna and is closely knit with India's biggest festival Deepawali. Shri Krishna, at the tender age of 7 years, saw his parents praying Devraj Indra. He asked them, Why are we praying Devraj Indra? They answered, 'It is done to get good rains!! Then Shri Krishna guided all the Brijwasis that we should rather pray Shri Goverdhan Parvat as it gives us greenery, gives food to cows, gives agricultural produce and shelter to us. Listening to the mesmerizing words of Lord Shri Krishna, all Brajwasis agree and pray to Shri Goverdhan. Looking at this, Devraj Indra gets angry and punishes all Brajwasis by pouring torrential rain. Now, in order to protect the loving Brijwasis, Lord Shri Krishna lifts Sh Goverdhan Parvat for 7 long days on his little finger. On that momentous occasion, all Brijwasis offer Chappan bhog to Shri Goverdhan. Since then, the tradition of offering Annakut to Sh Goverdhan has continued and is joyously celebrated. In Mathura district, there is a holy village, Goverdhan, where devotees take 7 kos parikrama of Shri Goverdhan Parvat.
