P&T Knitwear is please to welcome you to our in-house reading group, the Gotham Book Club — meeting once a month to discuss our favorite fiction & nonfiction about New York City.
This month, we'll be reading & discussing , by Olivia Laing: the award-winning and iconic blended work of biography, memoir, and cultural criticism on the subject of loneliness, told through the lives of iconic artists.
Increasingly fascinated by her daily experiences of loneliness, as someone new to New York in her mid-thirties, Olivia Laing began to explore the city by way of art. Moving from Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks to Andy Warhol’s Time Capsules, from Henry Darger’s hoarding to David Wojnarowicz’s AIDS activism, Laing conducts an electric, dazzling investigation into what it means to be alone through , illuminating not only the causes of loneliness but also how it might be resisted and redeemed.
Named a best book of the year by NPR, Newsweek, Slate, Pop Sugar, Marie Claire, Elle, Publishers Weekly, and Lit Hub, is a celebration of a strange and lovely state, adrift from the larger continent of human experience, but intrinsic to the very act of being alive.
- This is a ticketed in-store event with limited amphitheater-style seating. Check-in starts at 6:30pm, with the discussion beginning at 7pm.
