Got To Get Out for a fairly HARD-days hiking? Want some stunning views and fitness? Join us!
If you have already done a few hikes , fitness is OK and want to push yourself a bit further, this hike is for you! 13year olds with parental supervision are welcome on this trip.
Got To Get Out group founder Robert Bruce (trained guide, wilderness first aid trained, New Zealander of the Year semi-finalist) is driving and guiding this 'there and back' of the Hakarimata Walkway with guide Isaac starting from the Huntly Parker Rd end, and finishing with the 'Hak Steps' downhill. We will relocate the vehicle.
This trip will start and finish at our regular meeting spot outside the Cloud (beside the Ferry terminal) downtown Auckland with all transport provided to and from the track start.
We will head to the track start very early in the morning in our modern comfortable mini-bus, smash the hike, eat on the trail, and return the same day for a "there and back" Sunday mission.
Schedule as follows:
645am - meet outside the Ferry Terminal Building (be early! 15min, so 630)
7am - Departure in bus after circle of names
8 am - coffee at Bombay BP (*can pickup people from here * )
10am - Start the hike from Parker Road Huntly: Hakarimata Walkway one way. We will relocate the bus.
(lunch on the trail)
4pm (approx) - Finish hike
6pm (approx) - Arrive back in AK at The Cloud
About the trail / risk disclosure:
Before booking this trip, please read more about the track here: https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/waikato/places/hakarimata-scenic-reserve/tracks/hakarimata-walkway/
NOTE: This is an intermediate track with a LOT of uphill , so a good fitness is required.
Got To Get Out will monitor the weather leading up to event departure. You can check environmental conditions yourself at: https://www.metservice.com/rural/regions/waikato/locations/huntly
You can also check in with the local DOC office to learn about other risks or hazards.
Weather can be changible, with flash flooding, landslides, slips trips and falls all some of the hazards of this trip.
Must Haves (gear list to be sent out to ticket holders)
- You need to have done several hikes before this one,
- Good quality boots / or grippy footwear essential, these will be checked pre-departure. Ankle support / warmth / grip suggested (trail runners are 'ok')
- Good quality day backpack for your jacket and warm clothes, food, water, first aid etc. This is winter so a good quality shell is needed,
- Essential is your own emergency blanket, whistle, food, torch (cheap from most stores)
- PLB a good idea though your guides have one. Note there is cell reception for most of this trip.
- Your own food (+ something small to share is nice!)
Extra:
- You should be self-sustaining, have your own gear and know how to use it,
- It's a good idea to have brought / downloaded your own map, checked weather.
- Sorry not dog friendly,
- No under 13's without talking to us first please,
Note: yes this is a guided trip but is a collective experience with everyone 'pulling their weight' and helping to finish. We are in it together. This is great team building.
Rob and Isaac your guides will have;
- emergency comms,
- first aid and training,
- maps,
You're getting:
- transport in a modern tidy vehicle to and from (mini bus) and all driving,
- concession paid to be legally hiking on this land,
- emergency training and support, including fully audited SOPS (safety procedures)
- great chat, maybe stories of Nepal or other places we have gotten out to!
Most of all, you are supporting this REGISTERED CHARITY on a mission to get locals active and outdoors.
So then, who's in? JOIN US!
