KEKO SON
Cuban Son masters: Kekoson & The Cuban Sounds brings you a Cuban Fiesta in the heart of Melbourne in Australia; their music sets any dance floor on fire and gives the punters a memorable musical occasion to remember!
In 2001, Keko Virán travelled to Cuba to meet Compay Segundo, Ibrahim Ferrer and Cachaíto López – his idols from the legendary “Buena Vista Social Club” and to embrace the essence of the country and the people that inspired the rich, earthy roots of modern salsa music.
The trip inspired the formation of Australia’s premier Son band, with a nod to the Buena Vista through its strong Cuban Son foundations. ‘The idea was to form a musical group to research and promote rhythmic Afro-Latin styles and have lots of fun with it along the way.’
THE OLLIE SHUTE QUARTET
The Ollie Shute Quartet merges the music of traditional Cuban styles like Son, Rumba and Timba with the ever-evolving music of Cuban Jazz. Comprised of a mixture of Ollie’s compositions and jazz standards you will have all bases covered for a memorable afternoon of Cuban/Jazz music.
Lineup:
Ollie Shute - Drums
Hue Blanes - Piano
Yunior Terry - Bass
Phil Binotto - Congas
RUBITA
Rubita blends soulful melodies with the smooth tones of the electric guitar and a vibrant rhythm section heavily influenced by Latino flavours.
Having graduated in 2015 as the first female to major in electric guitar performance at Otago University in Aotearoa, Rachel Kibblewhite is the singer-songwriter behind Rubita. Her 2022 pop-soul single Geraldine was named one of the best songs of the year by Flying Nun Records, and the Rubita Band has toured across New Zealand, performing at major festivals such as Splore, CubaDupa, and Newtown Festival. Influenced by the sounds of Latin America, her band features Henry Smithers on bass, delivering soulful lines and groovy solos, alongside Christian Silva, a world-class percussionist showcasing an array of rhythms and beats.
Bar Oussou pays it's respects to the Wurundjeri People of The Kulin Nation, acknowledging that this event is being held on stolen land & that Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was & Always will be....
