About the speaker:
ATSAIC Joe Kefer has been a Special Agent with the U.S. Secret Service since 2003. Initially he was assigned to the San Francisco Field Office, where he investigated counterfeit currency, credit cards, threats against U.S. Secret Service protectees, and was assigned for over two years to the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force. In 2009, he transferred to the Secret Service’s Counter Assault Team in Washington D.C., and provided physical protection to the President, Vice President, and other Secret Service protectees. In 2013, he was assigned to the Presidential Protective Division, and provided physical protection to the President, his family, and members of his administration.
At the conclusion of 2016, after a brief stint covering then President-Elect Trump, Joe transferred to the Chicago Field Office, where he has investigated financial crimes and cyber fraud, including counterfeit currency, counterfeit credit cards, financial institution fraud, embezzlement, computer intrusion, wire fraud, ransomware, mobile wireless tracing, and cryptocurrency tracing. He was promoted to Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge in April 2018, and since then has supervised the same type of investigations. In 2022, he was assigned to train all new agents assigned to Chicago, providing a two-week orientation that he developed over the course of several years.
In December 2022, he was assigned as the supervisor of the Chicago Field Office Cyber Task Force, focusing on computer intrusion and ransomware, and he also coordinates the outward-facing Cyber Fraud Task Force (CFTF), a partnership between public and private sector agencies and companies for the purpose of information sharing, education, and collaboration. He also coordinates the Chicago Field Office Search and Arrest Warrant Team, responsible for the safe execution of warrants in the Chicago Field Office district.
