About this Event
Golden Shoals:Golden Shoals is a fiddle and guitar duo with a "rousing old-time-style music that’s fueled by acerbic modern-day wit” (-No Depression Magazine). They are no strangers to traditional music, having placed in contests including Clifftop (3rd place 2023, 4th place 2022), Mount Airy, The Grand Masters Fiddlers Championship and Galax. Often switching instruments between fiddle, two guitars, and banjo, their original songs have been compared to Gillian Welch, with the added edge of instrumental prowess informed by energetic old time and bluegrass recordings.Initially brought together by a mutual love of American folk music, Golden Shoals' sound has expanded to include country, Americana, Indie and Experimental influences, allowing them to move more freely beyond genre boundaries with their songwriting while still emanating a deep understanding of Old-Time and Bluegrass music. Ever inspired by the enduring spirit of traditional Appalachian mountain music, their songwriting comes across as simple, honest, and fresh to the ears. The listener can expect the polished technique of conservatory training, in tandem with the grit, drive, and soul of musicians like Roscoe Holcomb or Ola Belle Reed.Elisa Thorn:“Cherubral”“Experimental folk for the bathtub”Meditative, psychedelic, and equally as introspective as it is energizing, Elisa lures listeners into a trance, keeping them engaged with her charming off-the-cuff humour and banter.xiik will be released in September 2025. It’s got 1000 layers of harp, but be assured, it’s not as boring as that sounds. Supported by James Meger (Sick Boss), Dan Gaucher (Dan Mangan), with guests Anh Phung, Ted Crosby, and Trent Freeman (The Fretless), the record was produced by David Vertesi and Elisa. This music was written originally for solo performance (using lots of looping and live processing), and has been designed so that it can be performed on Elisa’s carbon fiber travel harp, and in many different configurations (from solo to quartet), as to accommodate as many performance environments as possible.Marin Patenaude:She will make you chuckle and blush, then she’ll hit you where it hurts. Marin Patenaude’s music is deeply honest, inspired by the wildness and free-spirit of nature, the messiness of human connection, and the overwhelming moments of existence. She’s from a very small town called Horsefly in Northern British Columbia, Canada - A place wrought with song fodder. The daughter of musical parents, she was raised on folk, country, and classic rock and is very much at home with a piano, a guitar, and all the possible harmonies. Her compositions have classic country undertones with a modern indie twist, supported by the refinement of Classical and Jazz training. Her vocals are compelling and mighty, her guitar distinct, and her content meaningful.
