About this Event
On Saturday 1 October 2022 from 11 am to 1 pm expert IMC members will present the Books of Survey and Distribution in the Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland. This exciting interactive event will include practical demonstrations of how to search the Books of Survey and Distribution and other IMC sources within the Virtual Record Treasury.
The BSD are unique. There is no other mid 17th century primary manuscript source, covering the island of Ireland, in which landowners in each land denomination (parish, barony and county) are recorded prior to the 1641 rebellion, and in which the subsequent proprietors — the consequence of land forfeitures and transfers under Cromwell, the Restoration and William III — are also recorded. These data are of crucial importance to research by genealogists, historians, geographers, place name scholars, archaeologists, and others. While IMC published four volumes of the BSD between 1949 and 1967 — for counties Roscommon, Mayo, Galway and Clare — information for the rest of the country has never been so readily available until now.
Join us for this hands-on look at an important manuscript source for Irish history.
