The Marriage of Maria Braun" (Germany 1979, 123 min)
by Rainer Werner Fassbinder, with Hanna Schygulla, Klaus Löwitsch, George Byrd, Ivan Desny and more
“I'm a master of deceit: a capitalist tool by day, and by night an agent of the proletarian masses” - Maria Braun
Fassbinder’s masterpiece follows Maria, a woman presumably widowed in World War II, only later, while climbing the post-war economic ladder, to become tragically entangled with an American soldier and the ghost of her first husband. It portrays the harsh reality of the transformation from the broken German society into an economic powerhouse, and the sacrifices women made to rebuild the destroyed country.
“One of Fassbinder's most influential works, and for good reason” - Rotten Tomatoes
13 awards and 7 nominations, including for the 1980 Golden Globes for Best Foreign Film
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Rainer Werner Fassbinder was born in 1945 in Bad Wörishofen, Germany. He is a significant figure in post-war cinema and the German New Wave, which spanned from the 1960s to the 1980s and consisted of experimental techniques and narrative structures. Fassbinder’s films are known for portraying German history through the lens of a cinematic melodrama, with a static camera and deliberately unnatural dialogue. Throughout his career, Fassbinder created over forty feature films, twenty four plays, two television series and more. His notable films include "Lola" (1981), "Berlin Alexanderplatz" (1980) and "Ali: Fear Eats the Soul" (1974). "The Marriage of Maria Braun" is one of his films that first caught a worldwide audience’s attention, earning high praise and significant commercial success. Fassbinder’s impact on the world of history and cinema is recognized through his multiple awards. Notably, his film "Veronika Voss" (1982) won the Golden Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival.
