The Village Square’s God Squad will present “Ten Paces at High Noon” on February 21, noon-1 pm at First Baptist Church, during its 15th season of programs featuring high-minded conversations on current controversial topics at the intersection of faith and politics. https://villagesquare.us/event/high-noon/For people of faith or no faith at all — because talking politics wasn’t hard enough —the God Squad is proof of the great things that happen when people of goodwill engage respectfully across their differences.
We have become a most tediously offended people, and we’re also trigger-happy. What could go wrong? Provoked by even the slightest offense, we’re on a hair trigger that sends us into conjuring up “us vs. them” and “good vs. evil” thinking and language. Of course, we’re quick to assign ill will and bad behavior to “those people,” while simultaneously ignoring the very same behavior in people who see things our way. Sometimes, this cultural moment we’re in — always poised to defend our group’s honor against all who would question our righteousness — can get far worse than ruffled feathers and the silent treatment, even leading to violence.
Surely we can do better than this as a society. And thank goodness the God Squad is going to have a thing or two to say about it at their February 21 program.
God Squad regulars, who maintain respectful and durable friendships despite their differences of opinion, include: Father Tim Holeda of the Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More; Pastor Latricia Scriven of Saint Paul’s United Methodist Church; Pastor Josh Hall of First Baptist Church; Pastor Joseph Davis, Jr. of Truth Gatherers Community Church; and Rabbi Paul Sidlofsky of Temple Israel.
God Squad programs are $10 (free registration option available) and a reservation is required. To learn more or register, visit https://villagesquare.us/event/high-noon/
