Greater Manchester is changing for the better.
Or so, that is the plan, according to Paul Dennett.
In this lecture, Paul Dennett—the current City Mayor of Salford—will illustrate his vision to change the future of Greater Manchester. This includes an increase in affordable homes and the creation of new jobs, tied into a greener economy; enabling much brighter times ahead for Greater Manchester’s young people, who are rightly concerned about their individual and collective futures.
So, how does the Greater Manchester Combined Authority Plan aim to deliver on these promises?
The promise of an increase in better jobs, affordable housing, and improved transport following a pandemic does sound challenging. That’s because it is.
Paul’s plan, however, puts the environment first: develop on brownfield land, whilst protecting Green Belt land from unplanned development. Paul will argue that his plan for Greater Manchester can only succeed through people working together. Manchester will need to be a city united if we are to provide new opportunities for school-aged leavers, putting the region in the best position for the future.
The plan, entitled the ‘Places for Everyone Joint Development Plan of Bolton, Bury, Manchester, Oldham, Rochdale, Salford, Tameside, Trafford, and Wigan Councils’ is at the heart of Paul’s proposal to improve employment opportunities for young people, to build the right homes in the right places, rejuvenate green spaces and reshape town centres. As a long-term plan for jobs, new homes, and sustainable growth, Paul will argue that it will enable us to build back from the COVID-19 pandemic in a way that brings everyone with us, striking at the roots of inequality.
About the speaker
Paul grew up in Great Sankey, Warrington, worked in a BT call-center before moving to Northern Ireland as a mature student to study BA (Hons) International Business at the University of Ulster. He went on to study for an MSc Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations at the University of Manchester, followed by further MRES and PHD study and lecturing at Manchester Metropolitan University’s Business School.
He was elected Councillor for Langworthy Ward in 2012 and was Strategic Assistant Mayor until 2016, focusing on equalities, cohesion, technology, change, transformation, innovation, prosperity, industrial relations and workforce. In 2016 he was elected Salford City Mayor and has campaigned for equality, financial inclusion, the living wage, social value, anti-poverty and critically, providing genuinely affordable solutions to tackle housing and homelessness crisis.
In 2016 Paul was appointed Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) Portfolio Lead for Low Carbon, Waste and Environment In May 2017 appointed GMCA Portfolio Lead for Housing, Homelessness and Infrastructure. He have recently overseen the GMCA's Housing Strategy, and is currently overseeing the Infrastructure Strategy and Plan for Homes, Jobs & the Environment for the city-region. Paul was honoured to be re-elected as Salford City Mayor in May 2021.
