Orfeo ed Euridice is a gorgeously beautiful Baroque opera, which we are happy to present now in live performance in the intimate Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, Virginia. Opera in Williamsburg created a video production of it in the closure days of COVID in Fall 2020, recording from each singer's home and editing the audio and video together. No recording can match the beauty of a live performance -- come and see the superb singers in this masterpiece. Our Orfeo in the video recording, the superbly gifted counter tenor Nicholas Tamgna, will be our Orfeo in all three performances.
The story is the timeless tale of Orpheus and Euridice, the most popular plot in opera from its earliest days to our own time (as one can see in the musical Hadestown). The story is that of a superb musician who loses his beloved and can't face life without her. Can he bring her back from the dead? To this core of the story, Gluck adds the woman's dilemma: should she follow her husband away from the beauty and peace of an afterlife in the Elysian Fields to life as his dependet? How certain can she be of his love, when he gives her no reassurance? This is 18th-century opera, so all ends well.
