About this Event

IAEDP Jacksonville is excited to announce our Fall CE: GLPs, Intermittent Fasting, and Eating Disorders: How Does an ED Clinician Respond to These Diet Culture Trends? We are so thrilled to host Tammy Beasley, MS, RD, CEDS-C and National Director of Nutrition Programming at Odyssey Eating Disorder Network for this event.

This event will occur on Friday, September 19th, 2025 at the UNF John A. Delaney Student Union (Building 58). We will be on the 3rd floor in room 3703 A&B in the WEST Building. This event starts at 9:00 am, and breakfast will be served.

Presentation Description:

As we watch the popularity of the new GLP1-RA medications and the staying-power of intermittent fasting continue to dominate diet culture trends, clinicians treating eating disorders are bracing for the inevitable rise in eating disorder prevalence and symptomatology. Dietary restriction from any manipulation of meal patterns and/or medications that target appetite hormones can be a significant precipitating factor in the development of eating disorders. And, for those who already exhibit disordered eating, ongoing dietary restriction can keep those individuals locked in a cycle of restrict, binge, and/or purge. Additionally, when the use of these medications or strict fasting patterns of eating is discontinued, our clients can find themselves struggling with rebound weight shifts and increased potential for metabolic malfunctions. Those with an underlying eating disorder or a predisposition for the development of an eating disorder may turn to eating disorder behaviors to counteract the body size changes they are experiencing. Eating disorder clinicians are in a unique position to support our clients, as we can help identify misuse of these drugs, moderate the misinformation around fasting cycles, and mitigate the development or perpetuation of an eating disorder. This presentation is intended to educate therapists, dietitians, and healthcare professionals about the subtle and not-so-subtle side effects from GLP Medic*tion use/misuse and intermittent fasting cycles. We will also focus on how to identify client-specific interventions related to GLPs and intermittent fasting patterns to help support our clients’ eating disorder recovery.

Objectives:

1. Explore and compare diet culture messages vs. research about GLPs and intermittent fasting and develop talking points for client discussions.

2. Gain skills to assess client’s misuse of medications or intermittent fasting and its direct impact on eating disorder behaviors.

3. Develop client-specific interventions to support recovery from an eating disorder related to or exacerbated by the misuse of GLPs and intermittent fasting.
