It's our final workshop of the school year, and we're celebrating Amphibian Week 2024 with this special Earth Art & Science combo. class! Biofluorescence is a naturally occurring phenomenon by which an organism absorbs blue light and emits it as a different color. Although similar to bioluminescence, biofluorescence does not happen due to a chemical reaction. Until recently, it was thought that only certain marine organisms like corals and jellyfish had the capability to fluoresce, but scientists have been uncovering all kinds of new discoveries within the biofluorescing world, including that some amphibians glow too!
In this workshop, we'll discuss the difference between the two types of glow, and which amphibians and other animals have been found to fluoresce. We will also create our own glowing amphibian art to take home (students will also get to take home their UV markers w/ lights).
This workshop is mixed-age and geared towards students ages ​7-1​4 years old. Advance registration is required. If registering directly from the Facebook event from a phone, be sure to open our website in your system browser for ease of registration.
If this is your first class with us (or your first with ​us at the PEA Studio prior to 2023), please plan to arrive 5 minutes early to fill out paperwork before dropping your student off.
Cost: $​19/student. Cost includes all materials, including a take-home UV marker with light.

About Amphibian Week: Amphibian Week is hosted by Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) and community partners as a way to increase awareness about amphibians and to celebrate all things amphibian. It is celebrated annually the first full week of May. This year, it runs May 5th-11th, 2024, and we're excited to be a part of the celebration!
