Get it in your diary!Time is flying, and in less than couple months we will be celebrating the 3rd annual Global Sports Sunday (GSS). 15 september 2024. On this day we want to challenge the Body of Christ to look at the community of sports through the eyes of a compassionate God.
In 2024 much of the world’s attention will turn to global sporting events such as the Paris Olympics and European Football Championships in Germany. Of course, we all love to engage with these big sporting moments, but what does God see when He looks at all the athletes and spectators? It is easy to see sports people as successful, young, fit and maybe wealthy. People that do not need any help. However, when Jesus looks at all these people he has compassion over them. (Mat 9:36) When we look at them through God’s eyes we should see them as people just like us with needs, problems, and challenges.
Beyond this, we want Christians to realize that people in their own communities who are involved in sports recreation, and fitness activities are part of on of the greatest untapped mission fields. They are our neighbors and friends, who all need the love of God to fill their hearts.
Through GSS we are challenging you and your local congregation to consider how you can embrace this opportunity to engage with the community of sport and even practically to use sport, recreation, and fitness as an opportunity for the gospel to be spread in your own context. So our questions to you as a pastor, athlete, church leader or sports ministry worker is this:
Will you spread the word and help us raise awareness for the need of the gospel to be shared in and through the sporting community.
Please set the date for GSS, 15 September 2024, on the calendar of your local church, sport ministry organization or other (prayer) partners you work with.
Whether you have been involved with GSS in the past or even if this is your first time hearing about it, we hope you will choose to join us on this journey as we look forward to GSS 2024!!
