Portland Movie Club Global Horror Films Meet-Up - Spotlight on Aterrados (Terrified) (2017) & Cuando Acecha la Maldad (When Evil Lurks) (2023)
Let's talk movies! Join PMC member, Cat O, for an optional Demian Rugna double feature. We will be discussing 2017 Argentinian horror film Aterrados with the option to pair the film with his subsequent project, Cuando Acecha la Maldad.
Please Note \- This is a horror subsection\. Due to this\, movies we watch may be frightening and disturbing\. If you finish Aterrados and feel as though you can handle a scarier movie, the double feature may be a fun choice, but do not push yourself to watch anything you are uncomfortable with. If you need a head's up about the the type of content in these films, I would recommend checking out the website, does the dog die.
About the films:
Demian Rugna is an Argentine director, editor, and screenwriter. He studied comic illustration under Horacio Lilia and later earned a degree in graphic design. He executes his passion for visual story telling through film, often times crafting non-linear and hyperlink stories exploring multiple points of view.
Aterrados is Rugna's fourth feature film, and the first film to garner mainstream interest. It is a twist on the concept of a "haunted house" following the perspectives of the family inhabiting the home and the police investigation around it. From Letterboxd: "They are in your house...watching you..: Police commissioner Funes and three researchers of supernatural phenomena investigate inexplicable events that are occurring in the suburbs of Buenos Aires".
Cuando Acecha la Maldad was the next film Rugna directed, following demonic possession plaguing a small town. It was met with both commercial and critical success, achieving a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes and aggregating an average of 3.6 stars on Letterboxd. While everyone's interpretation of what "scary" means is idiosyncratic, this was labeled by many as the scariest movie released in 2023. From Letterboxd: "There's no point in praying. Residents of a small rural town discover that a demon is about to be born among them. They desperately try to escape before evil is born, but it may be too late".
Tips & Reminders:
\ Both films are available through Shudder, Amazon, and physical media (If you would like to rent, Movie Madness is always a good option). The latter is additionally available to stream on Hulu.
\ This is a Saturday group meetup, which deviates from the normal Sunday Lucky Lab dates. You can still come on Sunday, there will be another great group happening that day, but this group is Saturday 12/6.
\* Once again, please take care of yourself. My goal is for each region to have at least one scary, true horror film and at least one more accessible film. This is the "scary" option for Argentina/Chile; look up cws if needed and don't feel like you have to push through; as long as you can actively engage within the conversation, it is okay if you're not able to finish due to the content.
Looking forward to seeing you there!
