About this Event
This special event brings together Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh; one of Ireland's most well-known fiddle players in her work with Altan, and one of the foremorst singers in the Irish language, plus Paula Meehan; an Irish Poet Laureate and one of our greatest living poets.
Mairéad Ní Mhaonigh: Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh’s name is synonymous with what’s good in the music and culture of her native County Donegal, Ireland. Born in the Gaeltacht area of Gaoth Dobhair, where Gaeilge was her main language, she learned her songs and tunes from her family and neighbours.
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, along with fronting Altan, has remained close to her roots between touring and returns to the ‘source’ to her native Donegal to play, sing and teach her music to a new generation.
Mairéad is also a member of String Sisters, which is a Grammy listed folk supergroup of six of the world’s leading female fiddlers. Together they have released two albums - the Grammy-longlisted 'Live' and 'Between Wind and Water'.
Paula Meehan: Paula is one of the best-known contemporary Irish poets. Born in 1955 in Dublin where she still lives, she studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and in the MFA programme at Eastern Washington University. Besides seven award-winning poetry collections she has also written plays for both adults and children.
Meehan’s many honors and awards include the Marten Toonder Award, the Butler Literary Award, the Laurence O’Shaughnessy Award, and the PPI Award for Radio Drama. She is a member of Aosdána and an honorary fellow of Trinity College Dublin. Meehan was named Ireland Professor of Poetry in 2013, becoming the second woman to hold the post. In 2015, she was inducted into the Hennessy Hall of Fame
