Virgil Johnson was the lead singer of the only Doo-wop group from West Texas, the Velvets. They were formed in 1959 by Johnson and four of his students. Their biggest single was "Tonight (Could Be the Night)", which hit #26 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961. After he left the music business, Virgil was an inspirational figure for the South Plains and retired as principal at Dunbar High School. Presented by Rob Weiner, popular culture librarian at Texas Tech University and a historian of Lubbock music.
