Learn how to create one-of-a-kind brushes using a variety of hairs including bucktail hair, moose hair, horse hair, rooster hackle, and broom corn straw.
This course is open to all levels and includes step-by-step beginning through advanced instruction in brush-making and painting techniques. Each day you will learn about several types of brushes utilizing different hair and construction methods. Presentations and demonstrations include cutting and wrapping of hair, knot tying, use of epoxy and methods to create and finish brush handles. The brushes created may be used for work with glazes, oxides,watercolor, acrylic,oil paints or sumi ink and a variety of other liquid paints.
In addition to unique brushmaking hairs, a variety of specialized bamboo, driftwood, waxed threads and found objects will be supplied for brush handles and wrappings.
Mark making and painting demonstrations will be conducted during this workshop illustrating the various marks each type brush students make and how they can be used in their own personalized works of art. A focus on how Paul Soldner and others used customized brushes to enhance the in-depth quality of their brushstroke paintings will also be explored in depth.
An extensive brushmaking supply list document will be provided and discussed during the time of the workshop explaining how and where future brushmaking supplies can be obtained. Students will be sent, upon course registration, a copy of An Optional What Students Can Bring Supply List. Additional supplies such as dog hair, cat hair, feathers or human hairs can be brought to the workshop to be used on their own or combined with hairs provided during the workshop. In addition, weathered wood, spindles, old makeup brushes or old paint brushes can be repurposed into new and exciting bushes during this workshop.
Instruction on how to preserve and properly clean older brush hairs will be discussed.
