The Glen David Andrews Band brings the spirit of a New Orleans Mardi Gras to the MudHen Brewing Company Station House stage.
The Story
A native son of New Orleans, trombonist-singer Glen David Andrews is a warrior for cultural preservation at a time when Crescent City traditions are being threatened. Growing up in the historic Treme, the oldest African American neighborhood in the United States, young Glen became transfixed by the second-line parades that wound their way through the streets of New Orleans. Both he and his older brother Derrick Tabb (of Rebirth Brass Band renown), along with their younger cousin Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews, learned the history of the brass band tradition firsthand from iconic figures like Tuba Fats. Glen began performing at age 14 and has played in the New Birth, Lil Rascals and Treme brass bands, bringing equal measures of musicianship and showmanship to each gig. As a leader of his own group, Andrews has appeared at the Voodoo Music Experience, House of Blues and Tipitina’s in New Orleans, Chicago Folk and Roots Festival, Houston International Festival, Kansas City’s American Jazz Museum and Joe’s Pub in New York City. He has also released eight albums as a leader, the latest being 2023’s Le Treme Carnival . Glen’s music is packed with hard-earned truths, humor, joy and hope — all ingredients for an authentic New Orleans party.
The Sound
With his commanding voice and fierce trombone sound, Andrews and his versatile band play everything from traditional New Orleans tunes like “Basin Street Blues,” “St. James Infirmary,” “When the Saints Go Marchin’ In” to brass band staples (“Ice Cream”), zydeco numbers (“Flat Like That (Get That Gator),” gospel numbers (“Spirit,”“Chariot,” “Didn’t It Rain”), funk jams (“NY to NOLA,” “Bad By Myself,” “Make the Headboard Shake”) and New Orleans party numbers (“Bury the Hatchet,” “Ike Ike,” “Tipitina”). They even deliver a killer cover of Dr. John’s “Right Place, Wrong Time,” The Glen David Andrews Band is guaranteed to keep the party going.
Proceeds from this concert benefit the Music Education Initiatives of the Cape May Jazz Festival Foundation
