Pre-kick off jazz in the Merchant's City
Brad Linde Quintet ft. Patrick Booth
- Brad Linde – Soprano & Alto Saxophone (USA)
- Patrick Booth – Soprano & Tenor Saxophone (USA)
- Eli Thayer – Guitar
- Duncan Kremer – Bass
- Nemo Ganguli – Drums
As the USA hosts Scotland’s football squad across the Atlantic tonight, we are reciprocating on home soil by hosting a brilliant contingent of American jazz musicians. Celebrate the centennial of one of music’s greatest innovators with an early show that finishes in perfect time for the Scotland v Brazil match later this evening.
USA-based saxophonists Brad Linde and Patrick Booth team up with a formidable rhythm section from the contemporary Scottish jazz scene to explore the expansive legacy of John Coltrane. This special performance bridges generations and continents, diving deep into Coltrane’s iconic repertoire alongside works by his legendary collaborators and contemporaries—including Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Thelonious Monk. The quintet will also premier original compositions written specifically for this project.
Expect a night of vibrant dialogue, deep grooves, and fearless improvisation, honouring the past whilst pushing firmly into the future.
The evening opens by exploring how the giants of American jazz drew inspiration from that exact same South American landscape. From Coltrane's driving 1958 recording of Ary Barroso's Brazilian classic "Bahia", to his classic quartet's modal explorer "Brazilia", right up to his spiritual masterpiece "Ogunde" (based on an Afro-Brazilian chant), this concert hits the perfect cross-continental note.
