About this Event
The People’s Health Movement Scotland and the SANE Collective invite you to a morning of discussion and planning, where we aim to raise awareness of how global wealth inequality is a real and growing threat to democracy and planetary health. By highlighting the impacts of systemic inequality and the ongoing failure to address its root causes, we hope to develop a social movement within the city that can bring us all hope of a better future.
Current actions in the United States and the rise of so-called illiberal democracies show that the modest progress made due to the work of activists and those committed to social and ecological justice is at risk of being destroyed. The evidence is overwhelming that policies such as austerity and the hostile environment have led to growing poverty and ill health across the UK. Popularist politics which depend on lies and misinformation threaten our fragile democracy, the future of young people and the most vulnerable in our societies.
The erosion of our rights, our hopes and our dreams is not an inevitability but it can only be stopped by informed and concerted action. We each have a responsibility to ourselves and to each other not to be bystanders as democracy, human rights and hope, so dearly won, are snatched away from us.
In the words of Fredrick Douglass, “Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.” By working, thinking and (acting) caring together we can achieve more than we might believe possible. Now is the time to begin.
