  • 6pm-7.15pm: Coaching Philosophy Workshop led by Jono McPhail, MSc Football Coaching & Analysis program leader at Global Institute of Sport
  • 7.15pm-8pm: Q&A with Gary Cole, President of Football Coaches Australia


About the session:

The session aims to provide an introduction to Coaching Philosophy, in doing so, exploring its conceptualisation both in industry and in academia, the process of "developing" a coaching philosophy and its operationalisation in coaching practice. We will start to explore the core underpinnings of a personal coaching philosophy and the difficulties in implementing this in practice.


By the end of the session, participants will;

  • Develop knowledge of the conceptualisation of coaching philosophy
  • Explore and explain how their coaching practice may be impacted by their coaching philosophy
  • Provide a definition of their personal coaching philosophy


About the speakers:

  • Jono McPhail - Jono is currently the Deputy Dean for the School of Coaching and Performance at UK-headquartered football and sports higher education provider Global Institute of Sport. He has worked in higher education for the last six years, balancing this with academy coaching roles at various clubs in the English Football League and external organisations. Jono has previously had teaching and coaching roles both in the UK and USA. Jono has completed an Undergraduate in Sports Business & Coaching, a Masters in Sports Coaching, a PGCE and is a current PhD researcher exploring "Coaching Philosophy from Theory to Practice".
  • Gary Cole - Gary is President of Football Coaches Australiaand a Consultant to Football Australia. A former Socceroo, Gary has led coaching and football departments at a number of Australian football clubs as well as senior roles at AIS and Football Victoria.
