About this Event

Zibby's Bookshop is so excited to welcome Girls Write Now mentor Katy Sacks and mentee Mia Dowdell in discussion on GWN's new book, ON THE ART OF THE CRAFT: A Guidebook to Collaborative Storytelling.

About:

A writing companion, inspirational guide to the craft, and anthology featuring interactive multi-genre work from the acclaimed organization on its 25th anniversary.

Founded a quarter century ago, the nationally award-wining writing and mentoring organization Girls Write Now has had the long-standing mission of breaking down barriers of gender, race, age, and poverty to mentor and train the next generation of writers and leaders. Building inclusive creative communities, Girls Write Now has empowered young women and gender-expansive youth to harness their talents, gain confidence, skills, and a community supporting them in sharing stories the world needs to hear.

is a hands-on guide conceived of and written and edited by the young people of Girls Write Now that draws from the organization’s dynamic curriculum and the writers’ own personal experiences spanning decades. It offers aspiring writers the tools they need to develop their craft including tips, insight, and advice on the writing and publishing process as well as critical thinking about the future of storytelling.

We all have stories to tell, but not everyone gets the mentoring and training or encouragement to become a great storyteller. contains over twenty compelling and beautifully crafted stories which are informed by the aptly named sections they belong to: Creation, Transformation, and Incantation. With writing and publishing tips from current and former mentors and mentees of Girls Write Now, along with refreshing writing prompts throughout, emerging writers from all walks of life are invited to pick up their pens and create, transform, and incant the stories they wish to tell and pass on.

With this handbook, readers everywhere can equip themselves to shape their life stories, and become the writers and leaders they dream of being.

About the speakers:

Katy Sacks is a British copywriter and brand consultant based in Los Angeles. She has produced multiple award-winning advertising campaigns for Nike, Spotify and Paramount+. Katy is a third year mentor for Girls Write Now. Her goal as a mentor is to help young writers identify their own unique writing styles and to grow confidence incorporating it into their professional work.
