About this Event
Are you ready for some great Jiu Jitsu? because we are!
Girls in Gis is a community of women and girls in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that come together through donation based training events. They are hosted, instructed, and attended only by women and girls. It's our time to come together! All ages and skill levels from any academy affiliation are welcome to attend. No experience required. Our events are designed for 100% participation, but do allow chaperones to accompany underage participants as spectators.
Our events are donation based in order to provide equal opportunity to everyone. Your donations provide paid teaching opportunities for our guest instructor(s) and help to expand and make Girls in Gis programs such as our events, our leadership program and instructional training programs and our scholarships possible. If you are not able to make a donation please contact us and we will work with you so that you are able to participate.
You can also purchase a GIG t-shirt, patches and more GIG merchandise with your donation. All orders can be picked up during the event.
GIG Utah - South Jordan Guest instructors: Shannon O'Grady & Rachna Grunkemeier
Shannon O'Grady earned her black belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu from Unified Jiu Jitsu in 2025. A lifelong runner and climber, Shannon found jiu jitsu at the age of 38 and was instantly obsessed. She has won a World Masters Championship title at every belt rank and was able to capture gold in both Gi and No Gi Gold at Brown Belt in 2024. She’s passionate about making jiu jitsu accessible, welcoming and fun for everyone, regardless of gender, age or background. When not on the mats, Shannon is CEO of Gnarly Nutrition, a Salt Lake-based sports supplement company whose focus is to create science-backed and effective supplements for active individuals. She has two kiddos and a blue belt husband that she loves choking out from time to time.
Rachna Grunkemeier is a 5x IBJJF Master World Champion, earning the title at every belt level. She began her martial arts journey in karate at age 12, eventually representing the U.S. National Karate Team and winning medals in multiple international competitions.
Rachna earned her Bachelor’s degree at BYU, where she was a member of the cheerleading squad for four years. She went on to complete her Master’s degree in medicine and worked as a Physician Assistant in the ER.
She first started Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to train alongside her three sons and her husband, who is also a black belt. While she loves the daily grind of jiu jitsu, she also values the growth and challenge that competition offers.
Over the past decade, she has been inspired by the sport’s growth in women and is passionate about helping more women discover BJJ. She hopes to empower more women to step onto the mats and discover their own strength.
