About this Event
Are you ready for some great Jiu Jitsu? because we are!
Girls in Gis is a community of women and girls in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu that come together through donation based training events. They are hosted, instructed, and attended only by women and girls. It's our time to come together! All ages and skill levels from any academy affiliation are welcome to attend. No experience required. Our events are designed for 100% participation, but do allow chaperones to accompany underage participants as spectators.
Our events are donation based in order to provide equal opportunity to everyone. Your donations provide paid teaching opportunities for our guest instructor(s) and help to expand and make Girls in Gis programs such as our events, our leadership program and instructional training programs and our scholarships possible. If you are not able to make a donation please contact us and we will work with you so that you are able to participate.
You can also purchase a GIG t-shirt, patches and more GIG merchandise with your donation. All orders can be picked up during the event.
GIG California - Los Angeles Guest instructors: Dominyka Obelenyte, Claudia Henríquez & Joanna Luo
Dominyka Obelenyte:
Dominyka is a Lithuanian born multiple time World Champion and first female black belt under Marcelo Garcia. She was promoted to black belt in January of 2015 at the young age of 19. That summer she went on to win her weight and absolute in the IBJJF World Championships, becoming the first rookie black belt to double gold, as well as the first and only European. Dominyka also won double gold the following year.
Claudia Henríquez:
Following six years of capoeira, Claudia Henríquez embarked on her jiu-jitsu journey in 2013, dedicating 12 years to earning her black belt. Throughout her journey, she has had the privilege of competing at every belt level, from white to black.
Her true passion, however, lies in teaching and mentoring kids. There’s no greater joy than witnessing them grow in confidence and self-assurance, becoming the best versions of themselves.
As Claudia continues on her jiu-jitsu path, her motivation remains strong: to train, compete, and learn from the best around the world. She strives to constantly improve, pushing herself to become the best she can be, both on and off the mats.
Joanna Luo:
Born in Taiwan, raised in Brooklyn NY, Joanna Luo began training BJJ at ClockworkBJJ in NYC under Josh Griffith then at Marcelo Garcia Academy at purple belt.
After moving to California she excelled in the gi at Gracie South Bay in San Diego and eventually found a home at Renzo Gracie Los Angeles.
In February this year, she received her black belt from her former professor and mentor, multiple time IBJJF world champion and Hall of famer, Leticia Ribeiro.
Her teaching style emphasizes flow and adaptability with attention to move with grace and efficiency, which can turn sparring into a dance of resilience and strategy.
