About this Event
The story of "Gilded Age Newport in Color" celebrates the remarkable contributions of African American leaders in politics, business, civic life, and the arts. Families of color ventured to Newport from cities such as Boston, New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C., seizing a rare opportunity for vibrant social and cultural exchange in late 19th- and early 20th-century America.
Rhode Island Historian Laureate and Newport resident Keith Stokes will draw from the rich resources of the Rhode Island Black Heritage Society, as well as private collections of historical documents, manuscripts, photographs, and personal narratives from the era, to illuminate the remarkable period of Black excellence in America.
