Gila 100: Bird Outing at the Catwalk with Brian Dolton

Date: Sunday, May 26

Time: 7:15 - 10:45 am

Location: Catwalk Recreation Area. Approximately 5 miles from Glenwood, NM, at the end of NM Hwy 174 (Catwalk Road). Note: NM Hwy 174 may be under construction; traffic is reduced to one lane with possible 30-minute delays.

Carpooling from Silver City: Be at WNMU Fine Arts Center parking lot in time to depart at 6:00 am. Ride-sharing not guaranteed.

Outing Leader: Brian Dolton. Originally from the UK, Brian has lived in Silver City for more than 15 years, and has been leading field trips through much of that time. He has seen more bird species in Grant County than he ever saw in Britain.

What to wear/bring: Participants are asked to wear closed-toed shoes and a hat. Bring ample water, snacks, and binoculars (additional binoculars available for use). No pets. Vehicle fee will be waived for this outing.

Possible birds: Woodpeckers (Acorn, Ladder-backed, Hairy, Flicker), Flycatchers (Vermilion, Ash-throated, Black Phoebe), Kingbirds (Cassin’s, Western), Vireos, Wrens (Canyon, House, Bewick’s), American Dipper, Yellow-breasted Chat, Orioles (Hooded, Bullock’s), Warblers (Lucy’s, Virginia’s, MacGillivray’s, Black-throated Gray, Wilson’s, Painted Redstart), Tanagers (Hepatic, Summer, Western), Grosbeaks (Black-headed and Blue), Lazuli Bunting, Hummingbirds (Black-chinned, Broad-tailed), Raptors (Red-Tailed Hawk, Turkey Vulture, Cooper’s)

Accessibility info: Ample parking in flat asphalt lot, including designated handicap parking spots. Ramp-accessible vault toilets and picnic tables at entrance. 1.2-mile lollipop trail (out-and-back with loop attached). 60” wide, mostly flat and low slope access along south leg of trail. Mixed surfaces throughout: 50% dirt/asphalt, 50% metal grating (catwalk section). Multiple pull-outs and benches in the metal-grated catwalk section of trail, suspended about 30’ above river. Open and shaded sections throughout. No drinking water available.
