Gidon Kremer, Patricia Kopatchinskaja, and Kremerata Baltica: Autumn in Latvia
This is not just a concert — it’s a historic moment! Two world-class titans of the stage, two unique violinists whose names have long become symbols of the highest mastery and creative spark, come together for a concert in Riga. Gidon Kremer and Patricia Kopatchinskaja — two opposite yet complementary musical worlds, who have earned their fame through tireless dedication to perfection.
Gidon Kremer, born in Riga, is not just a violinist, but a legend whose name is etched in the history of classical music. Raised under the influence of the great David Oistrakh, Kremer became the artist whose path largely defined the development of global musical art. A winner of the most prestigious competitions, he not only severed ties with the Soviet Union but has since become a symbol of freedom in the arts. His festival in the Austrian town of Lockenhaus and the Kremerata Baltica orchestra, which has become a benchmark for chamber music performance, are just a few parts of what makes his name an inseparable part of 21st-century musical culture.
Creation, burning passion, restless search, uncompromising spirit, and a remarkably coherent worldview — Kremer has long earned a reputation as a larger-than-life artist and a man of iron principles. This is why seasoned audiences are always keenly interested in the names of those Gidon Kremer chooses as his stage partners — whether it’s the legendary pianist Martha Argerich or her young colleague Georgy Osokin, the wise clown Slava Polunin, or the eccentric Igudesman & Joo... This list is long and impressive, but one resounding name from Latvia is yet to be revealed to the world: Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
Patricia, whose artistry and unique violin playing have been recognized by many, continues to astound the musical community with her exceptional performances. The New York Times calls her “a star who is unafraid to challenge tradition and bring new energy to classical music.” Meanwhile, The Guardian states that her style is “a powerful and expressive interpretation that captivates the audience from the first note.” These accolades further solidify her status as one of the brightest figures in the classical music world.
“I live as if wound up,” said Gidon Kremer once. “Did my parents wind me up? Circumstances? Fate? Even after writing four books, I still haven’t figured it out... I try to live in the present. While it’s given to me, I draw from its possibilities.” This unwavering approach to life and music is what makes his playing unique, and his partnership with Patricia Kopatchinskaja an exceptional event in the musical world.
In this concert, alongside Kremerata Baltica and the outstanding percussionist Andrey Pushkarev, they will present a program that inspires and immerses the audience in the world of music. The program will feature works that blend elements of classical and contemporary music traditions, as well as arrangements that bring new colors to familiar motifs. Special attention will be given to a composition written for Gidon Kremer and his constant partner Tatiana Grindenko, as well as an arrangement of Schubert’s string quartet for string orchestra, prepared by Patricia Kopatchinskaja.
You won’t find such a combination of mastery and magic anywhere else. Gidon Kremer and Patricia Kopatchinskaja — a meeting of two worlds, two histories, and two talents, who have found completely different, yet equally powerful paths in their art. Don’t miss the chance to witness this unique event in Latvia.
