Butler County Historical Society Executive Director Brian Smith presents "Ghost Towns, Signposts and Crossroads: Butler County's Vanished and Missing Communities, Part 2 - Eastern Portion." This presentation covers 29 towns from the eastern side of the county that have faded in importance or have altogether disappeared over the years. During his presentation, Smith explains why many of the communities vanished. Some of the lost areas lived and died by the Miami Erie Canal or railroads that ceased to be used or needed. Others relied on mills and other industries that faded away with time while still others were absorbed by larger communities.
Hear tales from the past such as the odd animal Samuel Augspurger used to power his early grist mill, the disaster at Ball’s Ferry, the only monument in the US dedicated to a pig, why West Middletown was once known as Heno, Miltonville as Skim Milk, Tylersville as Pug Muncy, and how should we actually pronounce Gano?
