A to Z South Derbyshire - Part 10 | Swadlincote to Swarkestone
Swadlincote Town Hall, initially known as the Market Hall, was built in 1861 with funds raised through public subscription. It was designed in an Italianate style, featuring a symmetrical three-bay frontage with a portico and clock tower. The hall served as a venue for markets, a courthouse, and later as a public building managed by South Derbyshire District Council.
Here's a more detailed look at its history:
1861: Construction and Initial Purpose:
The building was erected on the north side of The Delph, at the corner of High Street and Midland Road. It was designed to house market stalls and a large assembly hall with a stage, reflecting its role as a central hub for the community.
Financing:
The funds were raised through public subscriptions, with notable contributions from Sir Henry and Lady Sophia Des Voeux, who insisted on the inscription "Time the Avenger" being placed below the clock face, as a condition for their financial support according to South Derbyshire District Council.
Early Uses:
The hall served as a courthouse, with a petty crimes court held "under the clock" every Tuesday for about a century. The ground floor also housed market stalls and shops, with the area underneath used to store fire hoses.
