The museum was initially a manor house constructed around the early 16th century, a period marked by significant architectural and cultural developments in England. This grand structure, with its intricate designs and historical significance, has stood the test of time, allowing visitors to glimpse into a bygone era. The Great Hall, which is now known as the Oak Room, boasts remarkable oak panelling that dates back to the year 1500. This exquisite craftsmanship reflects the artistry and skill of the period, showcasing the importance of woodwork in the design of stately homes during the Tudor era.
The original manor house served as the residence of Susanna Hall, née Shakespeare, who was the daughter of the illustrious English playwright William Shakespeare. Her connection to such a prominent literary figure adds a layer of historical depth to the museum, as visitors can explore the life and times of one of England's most celebrated authors through the lens of his family. Susanna Hall's life in this manor house would have been intertwined with the cultural and social dynamics of the time, providing a rich narrative that enhances the visitor experience.
In 1612, the Abington gallows became notorious as the site of five hangings that followed the witch trials in Northamptonshire. This grim event marks one of the earliest recorded instances of trial by ducking stool in England, a method used to determine a person's guilt or innocence based on their ability to survive a perilous test. The trials were a reflection of the societal fears and superstitions prevalent during that era, revealing the darker aspects of human nature and the lengths to which communities would go to seek justice or vengeance. The historical significance of these events resonates within the walls of the museum, as it serves as a reminder of the complex interplay between law, morality, and societal beliefs in early modern England.
The museum not only preserves the architectural beauty of the manor house but also serves as a vital repository of local history, offering insight into the lives of those who inhabited it and the events that unfolded in its vicinity. As visitors wander through the Oak Room and other areas of the museum, they are invited to reflect on the rich tapestry of stories that have shaped the cultural heritage of the region, making it a significant landmark for both history enthusiasts and casual visitors alike.
Over its extensive history, Abington has also functioned as a working farm and was transformed into a private asylum for the mentally ill, dubbed Abington Abbey Retreat, in 1845. The asylum ceased operations in 1892 when the Manor House and its grounds were gifted to Northampton Council. Following a comprehensive restoration in 1994, the house was reopened to the public as a museum.
