Description:
Come to this upcoming workshop where you will learn the foundational skills required to naturally tan leather by using fish skin!
With the same basic fibre structure as mammal skin, fish skin is readily available, small and easy to tan using household ingredients and equipment.
By doing this process you can gain a essential understanding of the process of leather tanning, particularly with emulsified fats and oils.
You will learn about:
- Obtaining and storing skins
- Removing unwanted parts
- Treating the skin with fats to replace the natural mucous in the skin
- Softening skins
You will receive:
- A section of fish skin to tan
- Tanning solution supplied
- Workshop tuition
- Complementary and optional follow-up rinsing & re-softening session Sunday 24th November afternoon or students are encouraged to find time to do this part of the process within two weeks of the workshop to remove excess oils and further soften the skin.
Fish skins supplied for this workshop are a waste product of the food industry and are ethically obtained as a re-purposed waste product.
All proceeds from this workshop to go towards the Save Wallum Campaign.
