Join us at Honeybee Centre with Beekeeper Casey for a hands-on event where you can dive into the world of beekeeping! This is your chance to get up close and personal with our buzzing friends. Learn how to handle a hive tool like a pro and get your hands dirty while experiencing the inner workings of a beehive. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to connect with nature and learn more about the fascinating world of bees!
“Get your Hive Tools Dirty” – 2.5 - 3 hour course for complete beginners/ first time in a beehive.
** This course would be ideal for individuals who have never stepped foot in an apiary but are interested in learning the basics of how beekeeping works. An introduction, to see if you would like to pursue a beekeeping hobby. This program is for guests who are 13+ years old.
1 hour – in class:
Introduction /Overview of a bee colony (castes, roles of bees), overview of what we will see in the bee yards (how to identify queen/drones/eggs/pollen/honey/brood vs capped brood), introduction to equipment, explanation of etiquette in a bee yard, getting each person equipped with a bee suite.
(coffee/ tea available)
2 hours – (including drive over to the bee yard - we will be moving to a second location for the bees portion of the afternoon)
In The Beeyard
- Meet in the beeyard/first steps upon entering a yard.
- How to light a smoker
- Properly fitting bee suite
- Overview of equiptment
- Open Hive, look at the frames, identify what we see in the hives
- Seasonal beehive maintenance
- Getting hands into a hive
- Talk about the flora around the site, what we would expect the bees feed on
- Time for photos!
- Q&A
Each students will take home a small jar of honey and a new hive tool!
