Come home, loves. This is mainly a poetry open mic, although fiction and music are welcome, just keep it simple/ acoustic because we do not have a stage or room for big bands and equipment.
No sign up sheet, we hold an open forum. Join us anytime. Take the stage when you feel moved to share. Share as much as you'd like! Just be considerate of others' time.
BYO snacks and drinks for yourself or to share, and help yourself to anything we put out to share with you.
Please wear a mask indoors unless you're eating, drinking, or performing so we can keep our disabled and immunocompromised friends safe.
SPECIAL COMMUNITY NOTE, PLEASE READ
Unfortunately, every six years or so, open mic lands on the same night as Trans Day of Remembrance. I *urge* you to go to the gathering hosted by Peoria Proud every year on this night instead if you are able to, if it suits you better, if you can do both, or if you can only choose one, choose that obviously.
It is also my lot to hold space for the rest of our community in the way that I’ve always promised to do every month whenever I am able for nearly ten years. I will, however, ask that we save BIG BIG space on this night for our trans and gender expansive friends to speak as freely, as unabashedly, and as openly as they see fit. Whether that be through poetry, through song, or by openly weeping. Let them ask us for support in the ways most beneficial to them, as we always do for each other.
I will also urge you to be mindful of antiracism and intersectional thought on this night. If you need a crash course, please work your way through Layla F. Saad’s Me and White Supremacy courses and MAKE time to listen to Black folks, and Blair Imani's Smarter in Seconds and Read This to Get Smarter About lessons. especially women and gender expansive folks. Sit in your discomfort and take it home with you instead of challenging Black voices.
We must get back to the basics of building community together. Join us?
