Monarchs and milkweeds have co-evolved over thousands of years, and they depend on each other to survive and thrive. Our Texas native milkweeds naturally emerge at the exact time monarch butterflies begin to fly through Central Texas, looking for these plants to lay their eggs. So many of us want to be a part of the solution to support our beloved state insect! However, native milkweeds can be pretty finicky when it comes to germination and transplanting. In this workshop, we will explore various techniques for the germination process, both indoors and outdoors.Sonia Koschoreck is the creator and Executive Director for the Monarch Sanctuary Project, a local 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the monarch butterfly migration. This project promotes native habitat spaces, offers digestible education, and fosters awareness and agency in our communities. The Monarch Sanctuary Project is tied to journey, transformation and, ultimately, humanity. From native milkweed cultivation to metamorphic movement exploration- our goal is to provide occasion and space for conservation, education, and interpretation.
